This fig family is named after the White Marseilles fig variety. This variety goes at least as far back as the 1700’s, and there are likely more than just a few varieties that bear this name. The variety itself was named after the French city of Marseille, where there existed more than just one white variety.

White Marseilles varieties are light-skinned, with white to amber interiors, sometimes with hints of pink. Figs can be very sweet, and often described as honey-flavored, with little, if any, additional distinctive flavors.
