When reviewing fig varieties, I constantly find myself not considering different characteristics, so I created a few tickler cheat sheets to help with reviews. This is the first for the General Characteristics.
The Kadota fig, under the name Dottato, has been grown in Italy since ancient times, and is still the leading commercial variety of that country.
Though helpful in identifying fig varieties, this may be even more valuable in the categorization of figs.
Commercial fig orchards appear to have been established in the coast counties, and even in the Sacramento Valley and the Sierra Foothills, earlier than in the San Joaquin Valley. In 1876 there were trees in Yolo County, in Tuolumne, and only 685 in Fresno County.
Present investigations pertain to pollen germination and viability of Ficus carica L. (Moraceae) for up to 48 weeks.
